BEWARE! ACTIVITY AND RESULTS ARE DIFFERENT

Dear Study Abroad Aspirant

I hope this email finds you well. We are now getting to the end of 2023 and as usual most of us are getting into the mode of reflection where we are thinking back on what we have achieved so far this year. I have been doing quite a bit of reflection on various aspects of my life including my academic endeavors, personal life, family, my business and investments. Whilst I am definitely grateful for what I have achieved this year, in some aspects of my life, the results have not measured up, even though I have been very busy working on these areas. This made it clear to me the old saying that activity and results do not necessarily correlate. I will explain.

As we know, taking action is necessary to achieve results but what many fail to understand is that just as you can take action in the right direction, you can also take action in the wrong direction. Taking action in the wrong direction makes you obviously very busy and lures you into the false sense of security that you are working hard to achieve your target results not knowing that you are getting even further away from it. You get busy with activities that do not yield any results. SO HEARTBREAKING!.

This is one of the most devastating things that can happen to someone and I do not wish that anyone falls into this trap. Honestly!

So here are some questions for you to consider as regards your study abroad journey:

1. How busy have you been working towards your study abroad goals?
2. If you have been very busy, do the results you have achieved so far match the level of activity aka busyness?
3. If the results do not match, what are your thoughts and approach about getting better results in 2024?

If your answers to the above questions are not favorable, do not despair. A lot of people are in the same situation. In fact I will dare to say that everyone starts from this point including myself. I remember when I started my study abroad journey, I fell into the same trap. I was busy reading through information and scholarship opportunities on the internet.  I was busy drafting application documents like my Academic CV, Personal Statement and Reference Letters. I was busy sending applications. I was busy contacting potential supervisors, but for a whole year I did not get any results. NO ADMISSION, NO SCHOLARSHIPS AND UNFORTUNATELY, NO RESULTS.😥

Results only started coming when I realized that I was engaged in activities that were taking me away from Study Abroad Success. Then I became busy with activity the right way. 

Now back to you my friend. I would urge you to look back and think critically about your study abroad activities in 2023 to ensure that 2024 brings you study abroad success.

Here is a little exercise for you to perform: 

Put away all forms of distraction and spend the next 5 minutes thinking hard and slow about the 3 questions I have asked above. Be honest with yourself as you take stock of where you are right now and if you need to change strategies in 2024 just like I did.
