Feb 26, 2024

Dear Study Abroad Aspirant,

I am back again to serve you with some free knowledge.

Today we will be talking about your Statement of Purpose aka SOP and particularly about the introduction of your SOP. You see, many people get it wrong and this hence they lose the chance to stand out amongst other applicants, which results in rejection.

So what am I really talking about? Essentially, the Admissions Committee reading your SOP are busy and need something to draw them into reading the whole of your SOP. If your introduction is weak then I am sorry, your SOP might end up in the rubbish bin and you would then lose the chance of an admit.

Sorry, graduate school applications are competitive so you have to put your best foot forward.

Have you considered that a captivating introduction in your SOP could pique the curiosity of the admissions committee getting them excited about you as a candidate? Making them eager to know you, your passion story and how the course you are applying to fits into your long term plans?

There are many ways to write a captivating introduction, I will break down one simple one you can start using now to 10x your chances of getting your SOP read.

The Intellectual Curiosity Technique

With this technique, you research an interesting concept in your field of study and talk about how it could change the world. Here is an example.

Artificial intelligence is going to take the globe by storm. Considering ChatGPT and other regenerative AI technologies that get released on a daily basis, the world has only just caught a glimpse of the potency of AI particularly in terms of its ability to transform human civilization for the better. My drive to be involved in shaping this technology has come from my desire to be informed and equipped to influence technical and policy decisions that would ensure that the benefits of this technology is maximized and the disadvantages and unintended consequences, as typical of any technology, is all but eliminated.

So that is it ladies and gentlemen. A quick one for now.

Don’t be greedy with this one, pass it on to your friends and colleagues in the same study abroad journey as yourself.
