Progress over perfection, over comparison and over entitlement - you cannot feel entitled

Dear Study Abroad Aspirants,

Do you know that there are things that can silently hold you back from achieving your study abroad dreams? Now let me tell you about these 3 things. These get so ignored to the extent that they have now grown to become the silent cancer to many study abroad dreams.

Hundreds of people come to my DMs daily with one common complaint as follows:

Zino I have been taking action but nothing seems to be working. I have been applying for admission and it’s been rejection after rejection.

So what are these 3 things I am even talking about?

Aiming for perfection.

Comparing yourself to others.

Entitlement mentality.

Aiming for Perfection: The truth is that you would never achieve perfect application documents for study abroad admission and scholarship so do not waste your time. Don’t get me wrong, you must strive to develop competitive application documents but do not paralyze yourself endlessly working on them such that you lose the light of other opportunities. Remember securing admission and scholarship is an intentional numbers game, the more you apply to, the higher your chances of winning.

Comparing yourself to others: Do not compare yourself to that friend that has relocated and drive yourself into depression thinking things are not working for you. Both of you are not on the same paths. This will not serve you. Focus on your own study abroad goals, take action, learn from your rejections and press on. Your own testimony awaits you on the other side of your hard work.

Entitlement: This comes in various forms. In fact it is a form of entitlement to think that as your friend has relocated, you should have relocated too so that means life is being mean to you and things are not working out. This is a very bad and limited way of thinking as it shift’s responsibility for results away from us to “life”.

Big Error!

This is not how the laws of success work. It’s that simple.

It is also an entitlement to think that you will be awarded a scholarship because you made a first class or strong second class upper. Without using application packaging to put forward your best candidacy, you will get rejected.

So what do you do to address these 3 things?

Aim for progress daily.

Progress over perfection,

over comparison and over entitlement.

Aim to learn something new everyday as regards your study abroad goals. Aim to take a few steps everyday towards your study abroad goals. When your application is good enough submit it. Reading it over a 1000 times would only bring diminishing returns.

How would you know when it is good enough? My answer is that experience will tell you and you can only get this experiment from immersing yourself in the process.
